There are novels where the story itself is unique or enthralling in a way that entrances you and keeps you moving through the book. Not that the writing is necessarily flimsy, but still, it’s the plot that captures you. But Adam Nevill…he takes writing to its highest level. “No One Gets Out Alive” is a captivating and incredibly imaginative story, but the man CAN WRITE!
It’s almost lyrical the way he weaves alliteration and a sense of setting. I have never wanted to take so many showers, scrub my bathroom spotless, or deep clean my carpets as when reading about the house on Edgehill. That’s how good Mr. Nevill is…I could feel every disgusting spore of that house in my skin, just seeping into my pores and my SOUL. Then, there’s all the other hellish, unholy, and terrifying bits in the underbelly of that place…I was scared even from the comforts of my blankets and nice, normal home.
I wanted to scream and shake sense into the main character to GET OUT NOW! And Knacker McGuire? Ugh…wanted to punch that guy in the face more than once.
This book is a long one, but it’s an entire experience. I have to think the author excelled in all his writing classes…I just cannot say enough how talented he is at the mechanics of his craft. He is SO MUCH MORE than the Netflix films of his works.

It got too boring and repetitive. Also it started as a supernatural thriller and suddenly was a kidnapping and flesh trade related which was so not in sync with how the book started. I don’t think I’ll start this book again. Wiki will give me the remaining summary

A young woman struggling against the gig economy and UK recession is forced to make choices which put her in a harrowing situation where a supernatural threat may be the least of her problems. The thing that makes this story absolutely terrifying is the fact that even though Stephanie must be one of the most resourceful horror protagonists ever put to page, her situation is still near impossible to escape. As always with Nevill's books, the combination of supernatural and eldritch horror is near perfection and provides some real chills right from the opening chapter. Thanks to the evocative prose, I could picture the grimy and run down Birmingham house with perfect clarity right down to the aged and peeling wallpaper and the filth encrusted carpets, adding to the feeling of desperation. The writing feels multisensory and the whole book is filled with sounds and smells which build the atmosphere immensely. There is violence and sexual violence here but none of it is written to titillate and Stephanie's character is not sexualised, which is refreshing to read in horror. The human villains are insidious and well crafted. Similar to Nevill's The Ritual, the book is split into two sections with the latter part growing the narrative whilst bringing the story to a satisfying conclusion. Highly recommended!

This was creepy AF. Real life horror is the scariest in my opinion. The weaving of supernatural elements into the story really worked in this case as well. I’m going to give the movie a go as well.
