Wow. What an incredibly forward-thinking essay about the 29th century. It's remarkable how much Verne conjured up and got correct, not simply remarkable but eerie. What a fascinating, quick read!

Interesting take on Earthly life 1000 years in the future (from the time it was published), but not much substance to the tale; more of a vignette of the "daily life" of the de facto ruler of the globe.

This thing is fucking hilarious. In 1889, Jules Verne (or possibly his son?) theorized about what life might be like a thousand years in the future, taking as his example a day in the life of a newspaper publisher. It's fascinating to see what he got right (at least, what he guessed might happen that has come true now, a mere hundred-some years later) and what he got wrong. Makes you wonder about the speculative fiction of our own day. I think the most jarring thing was the social angle--the assumptions of what men and women do, that all the big jobs go to men, the way the protagonist talks to his wife. (Protagonist is a bit of a dick all around, actually.) That more than the hit-or-miss technology predictions really dates it to 1889.

Anyway, it's a quick read and I'm glad I found it on the copy of Moon Reader (free ereader software) I put on my phone this fall. I agree with other reviewers that this seems more of a Michel Verne than Jules Verne story, but it's still interesting as a bit of sci-fi history.

An interesting look at the year 2889 in this short story by Jules Verne - or more likely, his son.
It presents a glimpse of a future a thousand years beyond the story's origin via one day in the life of the editor of the Earth Chronicle: Mr. Fritz Napoleon Smith, the man who "originated telephonic journalism". Mostly, of course, the predictions are quite conservative (in a thousand years, improvements include advances in "the mean of human life from 37 up to 52 years").

It was quite interesting to see what Jules Verne's version of the future would look like from the lens of 1889!
