Just finished “Ninth House” by Leigh Bardugo.  (Author of Shadow and Bone / Six of Crows). It is dark academia at Yale.  The secret societies practice magic and an outsider who can see ghosts has to solve a mystery and pass her classes while keeping entitled magic users from eating the world.  It’s dark and a bit grim, but very compelling.  The main character is a survivor and takes absolutely zero shit. Review the TWs if you need to. #book

I thoroughly enjoyed my reading experience with this one. I know it's been around for some time but trigger warnings for rape, violence, and drug use.

I really enjoyed the pacing of this book, the writing style and the characters. The super natural elements were very well done. The Groombride was probably my favorite part of the book. It felt very atmospheric and the writing felt like you could picture everything that was happening but wasn't too detailed or wordy. I know a lot of people complained that this book was slow but I think it was the perfect pacing for a detective novel. You have to expect some "slow" point to understand the magic systems and world building. I feel like Leigh Bardugo did a great job of explaining all of this but kept the plot moving still.

My one criticism is that this was marketed as an adult book but read more like an advanced YA or NA book vs an adult novel. With that being said the writing was still great. I kept wanting to know more about the Grays, the different abilities or the society members, and where the story was going. Galaxy (Alex) was such a diverse and intense character to read about and from her prospective. I can't wait to see what happens next!
