Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space is a thoughtful, incisive study into how the portrayal of disability in fairy tales can, and has, influenced and shaped societal structures, behaviors, and expectations (focusing mainly on Western/European stories and audiences). In addition to analyzing several fairy tales with regard to how they represent disability, Leduc also draws on her personal experiences, and those of other disabled community members, providing  meaningful, nuanced  conversation around disability representation and the power of story.

Fairy tales are a subject I find fascinating, and I was so excited to read about them from a disability studies perspective--and I was not disappointed. On a more personal level, I found this book really helpful in contextualizing a lot of my own experiences, and it's a book I'll definitely be coming back to.
