Automate the Boring Stuff with Python: Practical Programming for Total Beginners by Al Sweigart

Really great work.
Less theory more practice (although skipping nothing essential).
Assumes no prior knowledge and gets you to right into business. Highly reccomended for every beginner python programmer especially those who hate the traditional academic style of more theory and less practice.
Even someone who doesnt want to be a "programmer" but want to automate stuff and make life easier can use this as a guide

I've been trying to find a way to get myself through a basic python course for years!

pretty good. some of the stuff in the online course is a bit dated and broken now but troubleshooting the various issues is kind of a useful lesson in itself

Thorough into, good reference for the basics. After that, chapters on each of webscraping, working with XLS, working with DOC and PDF, CSV and JSON, multithreading & date/time, DMS & email, image manipulation, automating keyboard & GUI.
So, the combination of (1) the basics and (2) choose an area in which to advance, make this a very good beginners book.
