At first it was difficult to get into. The deep vein of religious themes was off putting for me as that isn’t really my jam but the further I got into it, the more important that became and helped me understand the characters more. It also fanned my beliefs about how hypocritical Catholicism is which is both frustrating and validating.

full of idyllic imagery, complexities and reflective attributes.

Kambili as someone who worships her father as almost god-like comes to terms with the abuse and the gaslighting and religious justifications for what he does. Adichie embraces freedom from this throughout the defiance towards the end of the book and after the events of palm Sunday

a beautiful read, like the rest of Adichie's works, as a debut I felt it was a compelling read, where this compellingness develops in her later works like Half of a yellow Sun and Americanah - characters are fleshed out and plot and characters are well constructed. Not to say this read wasn't. It was a very satisfying read in a sense.

Most of the book is slow but the end comes very quickly
