I received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
I love chickens and would love to have some of my own…. sadly, not going to happen as most gardens here are just not the right size for that. I want to give chickens plenty of space, and that is just not happening. Sadly. Because if I had a big garden I would definitely add some cute chickens to the mix!
This book is all about chickens. From what kinds there are (and how they look, I didn’t know there was a ninja, um, all black chicken) to feathers to how chickens are born to well everything else about chickens. I knew quite a few things already, the basics to say (how chickens are born/rooster differences/how chickens look inside/that they cannot fly, and some other basic information). But there was plenty of information that was very new to me and made me love these feathery girls and boys even more. I loved that it went much further than just biology and what chickens are. We also see stories, the history, what people do with eggs, and more.
I loved seeing the feathers (so many different kinds and I would love to add them to a notebook in real life).
I have to say I thought those combs mentioned were fake, or at least most of them! I really thought that there were just two or three kinds of combs, I didn’t expect there to be that many. So I did what every person would do when they have questions these days (especially when it is November and the libraries are closed and also not nearby), go to Google. There I found a wealth of information with photographs. And then I could believe! I even found a couple of other combs! WOW.
The art in this book is just gorgeous, beautiful, and wow. I loved it so so much!
All in all, this is one chicken-tastic book I would recommend to all. I learned so much new things!

From the wonderful endpapers to the relationship chickens and humans (and everything in between) this is a beautifully illustrated and child friendly introduction to the chicken. Highly recommended for all your FFA members and really, anyone.

Warning: this is not a book that respects chickens. This book has a two page spread of different chickens’ eggs shown cooked and prepared for humans to eat.
I chose to check out this book because I am an animal advocate and it appeared to be animal friendly, recognizing that chickens have personalities. However, after seeing that the authors believe chickens are here for humans to use I was not able to finish. Chickens’ eggs belong to them and should not be stolen to be eaten by humans. Eggs are also very unhealthy for humans to eat.
I do not recommend this book as it is not forward thinking.

This was an adorable, well illustrated book with lots of great facts about chickens. It inspired me to want to try keeping chickens, which I think was its goal! Would love a quail, duck, goose version etc

Trying to recruit my 3yr old into my homesteading fantasy using this book as a leaping off point. So far, she's into it. Have to plan a farm visit soon to deepen her love o' chickens - then we can gang up and weaken her dad's resolve!

Okay, full disclosure - I hate chickens. I was once viciously attacked in a chicken coop in my teens while trying to collect eggs. I've also met chickens randomly on the sidewalks while walking in Seoul. And I've had chicken thrown at me during a wedding. So why oh why would I want to read a book all about chickens? Well, frankly because this book is so cool! There are tons of facts, diagrams, pictures, and illustrations. There is just so much info here! So although I only like eating chicken, this is actually a pretty neat book that I know my elementary students are going to love flipping through and finding a whole assortment of chicken facts! Bird brain indeed!

Chickenology is a fun and interesting read into the world of chickens.
Even though it is geared for children, the information presented should be interesting to anyone.
Bright colours, tons of detailed illustrations, and informative text will delight all readers.
I didn't find all the information correct, though most of it was.
I happen to thoroughly enjoy chickens, and one day, will have a small flock of my own. What breed? Ah... I've lots to choose from.. for some ideas...read the book! :)
