Emphasis on "speculative" memoir. I would be surprised if teenagers could figure out this book because 2 timelines of Shannon and "Erin" (same person, Erin is her birth name) seem to be like 7 timelines. I'm not sure what Gibney was trying to accomplish with jumping around with added sci fi elements to finding her birth father. As a memoir, it doesn't read as it should and every version of Shannon is an unreliable narrator of her own life unfortunately.

This is not an easy book to read—and I mean that literally. It is fragmented with sections of extended thinking/justifying/philosophizing/questioning combined with narratives that zig and zag around each other along—as well as bits of photos and letters. I appreciate that Gibney likely made those choices so the form of the book would mirror its content.

I am not really a fan of speculative fiction, and I did not realize this book was part speculative until after I started reading it. The biography part I really enjoyed, the speculative part, it took me a minute and at times I had a hard time understanding. I was able to finish the book. I am planning to read the previous biography book by this author. That book seems more my speed. I was just not the audience for this particular read
I received a copy of the book via Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review of my own thoughts and opinions.

Such an interest read, I felt as though I was unraveling the mystery of her life through each chapter disjointed by time and reality. She sets the stories of ‘Shannon’ on equal footing with ‘Erin’s’ So in a way both are true parts of her story. Erin is real to her.
