The older historical sections provide incredible insights into the history and development of African American foodways. But the book's 11 years old, and the more "current" sections have not, imo, aged well. Look to Michael Twitty's The Cooking Gene instead if you're interested in the "now" of Black food.
Graphic: Confinement, Racism, Slavery, and Colonisation
Moderate: Fatphobia and Racial slurs
