Sophie appears to have the perfect life, loving husband and family and a prestigious job, but Sophie thinks she is going mad. She forgets things, she makes mistakes and suddenly her perfect life isn't perfect any more. The people start to die around her and Sophie has to reinvent herself to survive. In order to create her new identity she needs to get married and then she meets Frantz...

The first third of the book is narrated by Sophie and it is a sad and tawdry tale. As a reader I felt sorry for her but was not sure whether or not she had committed the crimes that seemed to follow her around, the blackouts seemed too convenient. However when the narration turns to Frantz, the book steps up several gears. What was a fairly run of the mill psychological thriller suddenly becomes very dark indeed. What makes this book so fantastic is the final third in which all the ends are tied up and, whilst the ending is a little too comfortable, the reader is left exhilarated. Lemaitre's Camille books were excellent procedurals, this is a brilliant thriller.

Blood Wedding has a fascinating storyline with Sophie Duguet’s world disintegrating around her, first forgetting, then misplacing things, and then being caught shoplifting. These are just the beginning of a downward spiral into crimes, which she cannot understand or even remember doing. The execution, however, is much less interesting than the plot suggests. It might have been more gripping had it had a much slower and measured development of the suspense. It seemed to reach its highest level very quickly and stay there for an age. I also found the change in narrator midway through a little disappointing, and would have felt happier if the mystery had been disclosed without the need for a different point of view. Of course, it is always easy to be negative and want to rewrite things in your head, and really, despite my minor criticisms, there was enough here to appreciate the writer and make me want to try another of his books in the future.
