The beginning exposition and world building was a little slow for me, but I’m glad I pushed through because this book is incredible. The exploration of grief and how it takes shape was beautifully written. The way the author wrote the history of Bree’s family and Black people in the South in general was heartbreaking and infuriating. At times, the structure of the Order and how it functions was confusing for me, but I was mostly able to gain the information I needed from context clues. I am so excited to continue this story and see what Bree can do with all her strength.

Enjoy this but frustrated and disappointed. I think overall it wasn’t what I expected but it also had some problems with it that bothered. Bree was a good character but not my fave. My biggest complaint was the pacing and YA cliches I don’t enjoy that have been showing in recent publications. The cliches are ones that annoy me to no end. Ugh. But the idea of the magic is cool but unclear at times. I may or may not continue.

Has King Arthur’s theme and I don’t enjoy those types of books unfortunately. But I did like the main character, Bree.
