The writing style was ok, a bit lackluster but that might just be because it was written from the perspective of a 9 yo boy. The book contains a lot of misinformations and lacks historical accuracy. It’s written from the pov of a German boy and spreads the false narrative that German people weren’t aware of what was happening in the concentration camps when he literally lives next to one.
Spoiler At the end of the book when the mc Bruno dies the focus is on the parents reaction to the death, sympathising with the Nazi parents rather than the 6 million Jews, including 1.5 million Jewish children, that died during the holocaust.
Instead of reading this nazi-sympathiser book read books by Jewish authors about the shoah and the Jewish experience

Major yikes
Auschwitz Memorial: "'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' should be avoided by anyone who studies or teaches about the history of the Holocaust."

This is one of the rare cases where I saw the movie before I read the book. Not surprisingly I like the book better. The story played out in a much more realistic way in the book.

Yes, the narration is childish but it is told from the perspective of a 9 year old boy. I liked that it read from his perspective and not from an adult talking about a nine year old boy.

Seeing these tough issues through a child's eyes reminds us of the lessons we should have learned and honestly as a mom reminded me how much differently my children and I process things.

The book centers the nazi experience in the holocaust and removes the blame from the children present. I have hear many Jews explain how this sort of storyline is harmful and does not manage to teach about the holocaust and instead deflects blame and teaches children that they are too young and stupid to a) understand what’s going on, and b) be part of the problem. The book spreads general misinformation and removes the grief and suffering of Jews from the story which is incredibly problematic.
