A very fun read! It gave me dungeons and dragons party shenanigans vibes, the characters are fun, and the world is interesting. A different take on Sleeping Beauty with some other fairy tales mixed in. Definitely recommend!

A hugely entertaining fantasy romp which takes as its core, the sleeping beauty story and turns it on its head. It's got feisty female heroines who are like a cross between Indiana Jones and Xena Warrior Princess. It's got hot, queer romance and it's the first in a trilogy. What's not to love? I was utterly drawn in to this and will absolutely be reading the next books in the series.

Fi, an Indiana Jones-ish historian, is cursed. When she broke up with her former partner, Armand, who she was romantically involved with, he cursed her so she would be bad luck to anyone but him. I’m searching for a way to end the curse, she is propositioned by Shane. Shane, a secret noblewoman turned Huntsman/ ax wielding mercenary, wants Fi to be her partner looking for what she believes is a lot of treasure. There is treasure to be found but Fi is accidentally pricked by the Bone Spindle. This links her to the cursed magic kingdom of Andar and it’s legendary sleeping Prince Briar Rose. Briar Rose appears to her often, saving her on occasion, and she decides to break the curse on him. Shane goes along with Fi on her quest, developing their friendship. Shane also runs into the mysterious Red, a relic thief, associated with the Spindle Witch. They are able to wake Briar, but find themselves in danger. Will they find a way to end the curse on Fi? Will Red switch sides and choose to be with Shane? Can Fi, Shane and Briar end the Spindle Witch?

Imagine Sleeping Beauty meets Indiana Jones in a YA adventure packed with ancient ruins, deadly riddles, battle axes, and both m/f and f/f romance!
Fi is a clever, bookish treasure hunter with a passion for exploring ruins and solving riddles, but she’s not one to believe in true love. Shane, on the other hand, is a tough, no-nonsense warrior from the north who loves pretty girls, smashing skulls, and doing things her own way. Then there’s Briar Rose—a prince who’s been under a sleeping curse for a century, waiting for the kiss that will wake him.
To Fi, cursed princes are nothing but fairy tales—until she accidentally pricks her finger on a bone spindle in a forgotten ruin and ends up bound to Briar Rose’s spirit. Now, she and Shane must find a way to break the curse on his kingdom. But they’ll face dark magic, relentless Witch Hunters, and some less-than-pleasant exes along the way—not to mention a mysterious witch who’s after more than just Shane’s heart.

I am so appreciative for my friend, Monica, for sending me The Bone Spindle so that we could do this Buddy Read! This book is EXACTLY the retelling I needed right now! We have a genderbent Briar Rose, a Princess to kiss him awake, a female huntsman, and a witchy version of Little Red Riding Hood. Two couples and some adventurous romance makes for an INCREDIBLE story!
Leslie Vedder has expertly crafted a world wrapped in Fairytales that could be 2 or 20 books and I would still be in love with this world. I got feelings of The Witcher, Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunter, and Once Upon a Time. All of these shows/movies are beautifully woven to incorporate fairytales and witchcraft. So if you like any of them, pick this book up!
I can not wait for the next book!
