I really struggled with this one. The pacing was completely off - nothing actually started happening until 60% of the way through. Also, for 12 year olds it read very juvenile and obvious, almost like a chapter book for elementary students. The last 40% was much more interesting and compelling, but not enough to make me want to race to read the second book. The only reason I ended up picking up the second book was because none of my audiobooks had come in from the library yet.
As a side note, I listened to the audiobook for this one. I think Kim Mai Guest is a good narrator, but perhaps for younger stories. Her narration of this book only served to increase how juvenile it came across.
