Feminist, fairytale retelling with sapphic representation and chosen family? Could not ask for more.

I had a hard time getting into this book in the first half because of switching between different characters and different timelines. I don't think it would have been quite as bad if it had like 3-4 chapters with each character instead of 1-2. Then, the timelines finally caught up with each other and the thick of the plot was upon us. I really enjoyed the second half. Overall I think it was solid and would recommend to anyone who likes darker fairy tales and messy/complicated mother daughter relationships. One little random detail that I found odd about the book is how people keep holding other people's faces in like every slightly emotional scene. Maybe its one of those writer things where you overuse the same phrase or word too much.

A feminist Snow White retelling that has a sapphic love story and a Frankenstein twist?! SIGN ME THE HELL UP.  Sometimes you read a book because you want to be challenged, to think deeply, or to learn more about yourself, others and the world.  And sometimes you read a book to be swept away and go on a beautiful adventure. This book was definitely the second but if you're looking for adventure, romance, betrayal, curses, journeys, magical powers, princesses, fierce female protagonists,  and queer longing...this book delivers!! It absolutely did the trick for me and I found myself sighing and tearing up at the end even though it ended just about how I thought it would. Hey, it's the journey that's important, right?! I loved it!
