Very entertaining adventure of Captain Alatriste, the veteran soldier / sword for hire who has managed to get both powerful enemies and friends in the golden times of Spain. Sword fighting and lots of intrigue. Love the character of

In the fourth novel in the Captain Alatriste series by Spanish author, Arturo Perez-Reverte, it is the seventeenth century, and we are in the beautiful city of Seville. The great Captain Alatriste and his 16-year-old protégé, Iñígo Balboa--the narrator--are recently back from the wars of central Europe, nursing fresh scars and looking for action. Perez-Reverte skillfully catches the reader up on snippets of history from the series with enticing lines and anecdotes of the past that leave the reader wanting to check out the earlier books. Alatriste is now given a fresh and daring mission, to take over an armed ship filled with the King's gold from the New World. He must pick a team of professionals he can trust, who will be able to handle themselves in a fight against trained soldiers, but who cannot know about the gold in the ship's hold.

Through the young and admiring eyes of Iñígo, The King's Gold is a swashbuckling tale of old Spain, gold, piracy, action, and adventure.

Entretenido y extraordinario.

There was a pretty memorable scene involving a ruffians comrades partying before his hanging, but otherwise, I couldn't tell if we were supposed to like the main character and his mentor or what.
