This is a compilation of seemingly disparate stories from the Rio Favelas, but the indication here is that there is one over-arching collator of these stories, who writes his perspective in the first person and is a recurring voice. I found it a really good-refreshing read. It seemed honest, the ambiguity of the endings (which I have seen some reviewers dislike) actually pleased me to some extent as it allowed there to be room for interpretation in the stories. In that way Martins does not seek to moralise, which I think to some extent is important for a book like this. I'm excited to see what he does next!

Martins brings a unique voice to his short stories which revolve around favela life and experience. He draws you into these stories with their grit and complexity, giving us the reality of life in the Brazilian favela, in all its facets
