I grabbed this book because the movie piqued my interest.
The book was good...and the perfect read during my week in London. I was quickly sucked in and it was definitely full of sweet stories and observations of a relationship between a man and a woman.
They meet in college...and every year the author gives the reader a glimpse into their lives.... whether they are in India, high on drugs....or working in a Mexican restaurant.
A good book.
**Second time around? Still love the book...and I know Dex is a bit of a jerk, that is what makes the book work....he grows out of his spoiled bratty ways.

'and then some days you wake up and everything is perfect'
dex and em, em and dex. this book documents the lives of two people, whose lives, after meeting on graduation day, become inextricably intertwined. both take completely different paths, but eventually they unite. this is a beautiful story of love, loss, growth, change, and grief.
i read this book after i watched the recent netflix adaptation, and what i will say is that the show is a wonderful adaptation - it is SO close to the original book, scene by scene. i can't see emma and dex played by anyone else - casting was perfect.
im obsessed with the greece year, the paris year. the multiple times they passed each other like ships in the night - dexter's unsent letters and voicemails, each of them sequentially getting in relationships. its brutal. it has aspects of normal people, in that way - it takes a very long time for them to be happily together. and of course, it has to be ripped away.
the way nicholls parallels the two arthur's seat climbs at the end is devastating. im simply going to pretend emma made it to that house viewing, and they're still together to this day.
'so this is where it begins. everything starts here, today.'
