I really enjoyed Arise. Unlike so many sequels that fall short of the first story, I thought this one went above and beyond how great the first one was. The majority of this book takes place in New Orleans in the French Quarter. You meet a whole new (large) group of people who are very interesting. I might have actually liked this one more than I liked Hereafter and Hereafter is in my Top 5 so that's saying something!

Sadly, I was a bit disappointed with Arise because of how hectic the plot line was. It was almost as if it was going to go on for a while and then BAM here we were at the climax. It was just a bit strange, but the book was great and Amelia was able to make a friend. However, she was dragged off by her crazed ex-boyfriend that she had Jillian kill. Also, Joshua and Amelia broke up, Amelia became risen, now people can see her, and Joshua and Amelia are back together, but they can't touch anymore. Amelia didn't even try to touch him yet! So how does she know for sure??? But can't wait for the third book!

Have come to the conclusion that I should let this series go as I'm no longer interested in it and don't have a desire to reread the first book to remember what happened.

After reading the first book, which I was fast hooked on, I felt very disappointed of Arise. The first half was slow and boring...took me forever and a day to finish this book. Will still finish the series...I just have to.

Tara Hudson has become one of my most favorite authors because of this series. Her skill at weaving an enticing ghost story matches no other, and Arise is just another prime example of her talent.

This novel captivated me from page one. I was already connected to Amelia from the first novel, Hereafter, but I could really feel her pain at the beginning of Arise. Being a ghost stuck between two different worlds, the living and the dead, has to be one of the worst kinds of hell. And it’s even worse when a group of demons suddenly put a price on your head. Yet, Amelia rose up to the challenges, even was willing to sacrifice all she loved to protect it. I think that is why she is one of my most favorite heroines ever written. Because despite the pain to her heart, she’s willing to do what was right.

Joshua is also another amazing character in these novels. I love how he kept trying to make things work out between Amelia and him, despite the boundaries of being the dead and living. Even if it did get them into even bigger trouble than before, like getting them involved in voodoo rituals. Yet it was also the little things he did, the little things to show Amelia that he cared. His loyalty and love toward her is inspirational!

Now, unfortunately, Arise didn’t have as much mystery to it as Hereafter. Amelia had already solved the reason for her death and learned who she was in life. But what makes the plot unique is how all the different events link together into a thrilling adventure: the hauntings, legendary old graveyards, and the voodoo rituals. I guess it should considering the setting is New Orleans, but it’s these elements that really what bring the story to life.

Honestly, I can’t wait to see what Tara Hudson puts together for the conclusion to this series next summer!

It was a slow beginning but got a lot better as it went on.

This series isn't really clicking for me, and I don't think I will continue with it. While the premise is awesome, the writing style doesn't work for me. All of those snapping and whipping heads, along with the twisted lips and snarling, growling, and hissing just sounds painful and overdone. Nobody just says anything in Arise - they shriek, gasp, and choke constantly, which made me relieved that Amelia was already dead. The constant recoiling, flopping, and clawing would probably have killed her if she wasn't already a ghost.
