A modernization of Carrie. Going in knowing the story of Carrie made it so heart breaking. Even in the midst of all the horror you cannot help but feel for Maddy.

THE GOOD: Great racial commentary, not only between different races, but internalized racism as well. I empathized IMMENSELY with the FMC trying desperately to appear white; reading this honestly brought up a lot of painful memories I’ve forgotten about from elementary and high school. It was cathartic to read about an experience that I identified with greatly.
I also loved the intensified romantic interest compared to the romantic subplot in Carrie by Stephen King.
-
THE BAD:
This book was too similar to Carrie for me. It was difficult to not compare the two novels because they’re so alike. Once I realized this was pretty much a modern retelling, I lost interest. I knew how the story was going to end. Jackson used so many words and phrases ad nauseam; it took me out of the reading every single time and made all the characters feel lifeless. The romantic subplot started off fantastic, but quickly sunk. The storytelling was lacking at points by relying upon various mediums to build anticipation. Yet all it did was cause frustration; in many of these instances, all I wanted was the POV of the FMC, which would have been perfect. The ending was also very underwhelming.
-
Overall this was just an okay book for me. I’m interested to read more from Tiffany D. Jackson and get a better idea of her own voice. Again, it was hard to not compare this to Carrie because it followed it too closely. It wouldn’t be my first book recommendation honestly.

Holy shit. This book was absolutely incredible and kept me hanging on every word. This was also fantastic as an audiobook because some of the chapters are in podcast format & several narrators were brought in. I will say while I was expecting it to get gory, it went from 0 to 100 real fast. Earlier scenes were not descriptive so I wasn't super prepared.

Still, an awesome read. Just please check trigger warnings!

I freakin loved this! Loved the discourse of being multi-racial. I'm mixed myself and always love seeing/reading stories about mixed identities and the struggles that come with it as most people romanticize/fetishize mixed race identities. Loved the discourse on race relations in modern day as well because people like to believe that there isn't the same racism today as in the past, but many small towns still do have overt racism, not just covert racism, and act like it's nothing.
My heart goes out to Maddy in so many ways. I can't begin to imagine the hurt and difficulties her character had to face.
I wish some characters were spared from death
Spoilerlike Mrs Morgan who seemed like the only teacher who gave a shit about the racism happening
. And I wish
SpoilerJules had died. That girl was vile through and through and lied even after losing her arm, her college acceptance, her best friend. F that bitch. Didn't acknowledge any of her wrongdoings to Maddy or any of the other black kids. She is irredeemable
. I liked that the podcast host was put on the spot by his guest host about how he framed his show and how he ignored how insidious racism is and how it could've driven Maddy to do what she did. The ending is quite open, and I'm going to believe Maddy was able to find who she needed to find and could finally live a life she wanted.
There are heavy topics in here so read content/trigger warnings.
