I picked up this book because it was another retelling of the famous Cinderella story, which I admit is a tale I enjoy in many of its revised forms. I was not expecting the sober and unromantic rendition this turned out to be. The characters in this story could easily have stepped out from our historical past, from the lives of those struggling to acquire basic human necessities to survive. This was not a magical, fairytale version of Cinderella but an attempt to tell the "real" story that, through years of retelling, eventually turned into a more gratifying and fortunate narrative. I found this version to be a dismal and sad story; not the happily ever after I was anticipating.

Read years and years ago, but continues to be my favorite of Maguire's books.

I was so excited to read this book because of how much I loved wicked! I was very disappointed. The book starts slow and stays slow until the last 3 chapters.

I've read most of his books now, and I liked Wicked the best. Mirror Mirror comes in second for me. The rest I didn't really like all that much.

Great twist on a classic fairy tale; this book keeps a nice balance between the "magical world" of fairy tales and the reality of the world that was lived at the time the story was set.

I never really figured out the point to this book but maybe because I am not quite sure what a Changling is. This is one of the few I put just simply stopped reading.
