I'm not usually one for memoirs, but I was drawn in by Bechdel's writing. Her accounts of trying to find herself through exercise translate to the universal human want of control. The book is an engaging mix of autobiography, history, philosophy, and humor. While I am much younger than Bechdel, I found myself relating to many of her experiences.

Maybe my mind wasn't in the right place, but it felt like a slog to read the middle third of this book. Perhaps this is because I was trying to read it too quickly and did not allow myself the time to consider the words of the Transcendentalists and Buddhists. Regardless, I enjoyed the recollections of early forays with "sport" as a child and then the latter sections the most.
