I really didn’t understand most of this book. I feel like there’s no plot to it. But it does have nice graphics.

If you're looking for a graphic novel with the flavour of Craig Thompson's ‘Blankets’, this isn't it. It tries, but it fails. While there are better slice-of-life stories out there, Jillian Tamaki’s art sets this apart. A number of pages left me stunned not just by the detail and gorgeous shading that evokes melancholy, but also for how much they carried the lacklustre story and text. If there's any depth to be found in this book, it's in her artwork, for sure. On the other hand, all attempts to say something profound or revelatory about girlhood felt like someone play-acting at writing. I would've loved this better as an animated silent film instead.

Really good, beautifully rendered graphic novel for young teens (lots of language in this one though).

This book does a very good job of evoking the feeling of being a kid and encountering something a bit too mature for you. As I was reading this, I was reminded of when I read my first young adult novels. I felt eleven years old, again.

The art is really beautiful. It does a very good job of showing movement. The characters' movements are very casual and natural. The character designs are very distinct without being exaggerated.

As far as characterization goes, it reminds me a bit of [b:Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret|37732|Are You There God? Neither girl is quite as bad as Nancy Wheeler, but they both can be frustrating and annoying in ways that are very realistic for girls their age. I can see girls seeing aspects of their friends and themselves in the main characters, but it could also put a reader off.
