My 11yo son and I read this for part of homeschool studies. I thought it was very well done, managing to cover a lot of geography and diverse cultures. I myself learned a lot. It was age-appropriate for older elementary or middle school children, yet did not shy away from the terrible suffering of, and atrocities that were committed against, the original native people of this continent. It is a sweeping overview of history, with a focus on key moments of conflict, and ends with modern times.
