While the first one wasn't the best book in the world, the second one surely went down hill fast and met a train somewhere along the way.

Btws, I really can't stand Kane.

The fun space adventure of book #1 is lost early on when this becomes more about securing power on a planet. I listened to about 2/9 hours and gave up when everyone was on the same planet. Not terrible, but not interesting enough to keep me engaged. And weirdly, it felt far more like a fantasy novel.

This is the sequel to [b:Starflight|21793182|Starflight (Starflight, #1)|Melissa Landers|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1456568054l/21793182._SY75_.jpg|41045510], and it centers on two of the side characters, Cassia and Kane. It's been awhile since I read the first book so I don't remember much about it, and Doran and Solora don't feature prominently here. I did enjoy Cassy and Kane's story, and I thought things wrapped up nicely at the end. There are a couple of interesting plot twists and turns as well.

I do not feel equipped to be able to write a full review for this book because it was such a mindless read. And I say that because I flew through it on audiobook during my commutes this week. It was not a book I had to think about during my commute, I could just listen and enjoy it. Honestly, I literally do not remember a single thing from the first book other than the two characters it focused on. Looking back at my review of Starflight, I was obviously excited about reading Cassia and Kane's story. But I went into this not remembering a thing and in some ways, I also liked Jordan more than Kane. Even if Kane and Cassia have been friends forever and you get the whole friends-to-lovers trope. I just do not feel this book was well executed and I feel like there was so much going on it was hard to fully immerse myself. I also did not enjoy reading from Cassia and Kane's perspectives.

Liked everything but the whole Cassia/Kane thing. Bad match, I found their dynamic boring.

In Starflight, readers met Cassia and Kane and saw that he was in love with her, but she had a secret she was keeping from the rest of the crew.

In this volume, Cassia returns to the planet she left two years ago to escape an arranged marriage to a cruel man. She is returned by bounty hunters to her ex-fiancé. Unfortunately, the last words she and Kane spoke to each other were not kind, but she is worried only about his safety. She manages to free herself, but then gets caught up in trying to heal her planet and being the queen.

Cassia and Kane must work through this new obstacle in their relationship while battling intergalactic mafia. When Kane comes up with a risky plan to take down the mafia and help save Cassia's people, things go terribly wrong. It seems that neither Cassia nor Kane can arrive at the conclusion they would always choose each other over everything else at the same time.

With many adventures and spots of trouble, all is well that ends well. Good triumphs over evil and love conquers all, even when other distractions arise.

A good read. Another female-friendly sci-if read.

It had potential, but it lacked the comraderie and characterization of the first book. And don't get me started on the last quarter of the book... very disappointing.
