Ugh, I’m going to be “that person” - although I see I’m not the only one. ;) I really like the premise of this book, but I feel like it’s another one where the author attempted to address too many topics ineffectively rather than tackle a few ones with impact. I just never really got attached to any of the characters enough to hook me into the story.

SUCH a good book! I didn't expect the storyline to progress the way it did, but Brit Bennett had such a beautiful way of telling this story. I cried multiple times and enjoyed every page.

Loved it. Such gorgeous writing. I typically don’t like narratives that jump around in time but I didn’t mind it in this book. I loved the different relationships b/w characters; some very complicated, some depicting everlasting love, some incredibly comforting friendships. I loved how this book discussed and dissected blackness/colourism and domestic abuse in such compelling and engaging ways. My only critique is that it’s a slow burn and there’s no real “plot”, but even then it was so gripping to me.

This book was riveting, inspirational, and heart-breaking. Bennett’s writing style is addictive and I immediately invested myself into each of these character’s complex journeys. Everything about this book was brilliant!

Brit Bennett is a fantastic writer. The story moves slowly, but in a way that coincides with it's small southern town setting. The characters are so beautiful, strong, and smart that you fight for them the whole time. Although some consider the "big moment" to be a little anti-climatic, I think the tone of it fits perfectly within the plot.

In my opinion it started out very slow and I might not of finished it except I had heard good things. It didn’t get better for me.

I fell in love with most of the characters in this book. Family is complicated (mine is too), so I found myself relating to small things throughout the story. I honestly could have read many more chapters and I wish the ending tied everything up in a big bow. But, that’s not real life. ❤️
