I really enjoyed this adventure that featured jumbies. I hadn't heard of them before and loved getting a glimpse into this wonderfully creepy tale.
Corinne is the kind of person I would have wanted to be friends with as a child. She is scared, but does what needs to be done anyway.
I hope to see more from Tracey Baptiste and can't wait to share this with my students.

I loved this! I loved the picture book, so I’m not surprised I loved the first in the chapter book series. It’s a GREAT representation for Caribbean lore and it was an adventure to boot. Excited for the next one!

Great idea, pacing was abit drawn out. Could have been written with half the words for higher tension.

It’s always hard to review a middle grade, because I stopped being that age a long time ago.
This was enjoyable and would definitely scare me if I was a kid. I’ve never actually read a story where there wasn’t a single Caucasian character and it was a beautiful thing.
The Caribbean setting, people, culture and folktales are truly beautiful and we need more diverse stories like this for children. The main character is a strong female lead with a very solid and loving relationship with her father.
I am very interested in the Jumbies as creatures, I think they’re fascinating, but the way it’s written doesn’t make me want to immediately continue the series. I would definitely recommend this to all children though.
