It's books like this that make me question whether any of the books I've rated five stars in the past really were five star books.
This was an emotional rollercoaster, to say the very least.

I can't rate or review this now, this book has left me an emotional wreck.  When I'm feeling a bit more rational, I'll come back and do this properly. (02/05/2024)

This series has quickly become an all-time favorite for me. More than anything I love Hobb’s character work. Both our main character Fitz and the cast of side characters hold a special place in my heart, and I find myself feeling genuine emotion for them (fear when they're in danger, heartbreak when bad things happen, joy when they're successful). The thing that holds this back from being a full five stars is that it’s a little long, and occasionally some of the romantic side plot elements felt tedious. I don't dislike the romance, but they spend much of the book going over and over the same conversation, and it gets quite redundant after a while. Still, to say I felt anything other than love for this book would be a lie, and I am both excited and nervous to read book three as I'm sure it will absolutely break me.

I remember liking this in high school but I think my tastes have changed significantly since then. There's a lot of ableism (internal and external) as Fitz navigates the new state of his body after the events of last book. I don't like how his early epiphany about how his body still can do things amounts to "at least I'm disabled, not elderly", which is extremely frustrating.

I'm still really enjoying this series overall but this book really dragged for me. Partly I just haven't had as much energy for reading which has nothing to do with this book. But also it felt like this book could have been shorter or something. It's not that there isn't a lot that happens but somehow it still feels like it didn't need almost 700 pages to do it. There's a lot of Fitz whining and being moody, I think we could have gotten much of the point with less repitition of plot points. <Spoiler> Yes Regal is conniving, yes Shrewd is dying, yes the raiders are mysterious and bad. </Spoiler> I think the impact of those plot points is almost lessened by how much time we spend returning to them without much development.  The ending happened really fast, but was good and has fully left me hungry for the third book.
