Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Do I think the plot is good? No
Fairly interesting, but I found the mystery to have a boring revival

This was everything I wanted in a book. A science fiction murder mystery that turns into a dystopian horror mystery thriller. I loved every second of this book. I hope the author writes more!

Dead Space is a tense science fiction novel that takes place on a remote mining station. Hester has been sent to investigate a murder of an old colleague. I really love intense sci-fi's and this ended up being a good one - plenty of twists and turns, artificial intelligence, and bad corporations. Highly recommend if you're a fan of science fiction.

Dead Space creates an outer space corporate dystopia that feels unsettlingly plausible in our current technological moment. That's definitely one of its strongest qualities. The characters Wallace creates are fairly well written, effectively communicating the attitudes that any corporate employee would likely possess.
Marley is also an effective protagonist, as her experiences in the political situation of Dead Space's world allow the reader to learn more about the various forces at play without massive exposition dumps. I enjoyed reading about her life, her experiences with the shortcomings of prosthetic technology, and the ways that she becomes locked into what is essentially indentured servitude in a capitalist system that she has no real control over.
The plot of Dead Space was fine, not necessarily groundbreaking in any way, but it was engaging enough that I wanted to keep reading and figure out what was happening in the Nimue base. The thing I enjoyed most were the moments where we get to learn more about Vanguard and its behavior; the exploration of AI in Dead Space was a bit more sparse than I would have liked, but when it was addressed it was done pretty well.
My main gripe with this book is probably more on me than on the writing, but I did find my eyes glazing over a bit when the technical details of the Nimue base were outlined at length. I recognize that describing the layout and function of the base was relevant to the plot, but there were times where I felt as though I were somehow out of the loop and had missed some key terminology in understanding what was being outlined to me. That being said, I was still able to understand the important parts of the plot and setting, I just felt as though I was missing out on some worldbuilding because of the fairly dense explanations.
I finished this book in one day, which shows me that I was pretty engaged, but after finishing it I didn't feel particularly impacted. If you're looking for a decent sci-fi mystery, this is worth a read. Just don't expect to have your mind blown.

Murder mystery on a space station, basically - plus some thriller action as the plot progresses. A solid, enjoyable read.

I thought this ended a little abruptly, it would have been interesting to see an epilogue that gave you a sense of what else happened without the details. There were a lot of characters that it was easy to mix up because they didn’t engage with the main part of the story much. But I still enjoyed this, it was an interesting look at AI and corporate greed.
