I really enjoyed the story and the time period. But I thought it fell a little flat. Wished the last 1/2 was as vibrant as the first 1/2. Still a fantastic read though!

Quick read. Good, but I wanted to know more about Mathinna and I felt like her portion of the story was the shortest.

Is there anything better than picking up the newest book of a beloved author? I read The Orphan Train years ago, and my heart was so raw afterwards, reeling at the fact that something like that took place in history. Once again, Christina Baker Kline has taken a point of history that I was previously unaware of, and blown my mind. Her dedication to research and attention to detail is unmatched.

The Exiles is such a heartbreaking story of the injustice women faced in the 1800s. Britain established penal colonies in Australia and sent criminals as exiles to the harsh terrain to work off their sentences.

It was such an original historical fiction story for me and I was immediately drawn to each woman that was introduced, and immersed in their story of survival.

Great book about a female convict sent to Australia and an aboriginal child who are both exiles.

This book interested me because of the Australian setting. When I visited 7 years ago, a tour revealed one of the places prisoners were sent. In this book, Kline shares the story of 3 women who were mistreated, abused and sentenced to unjust imprisonment in an Australian penal colony. This book was another side human history we don't frequently hear/read about, the effects of colonial rule and the displacement of the Aboriginal people.
