I usually don't read books about vampires but I enjoyed this one. Can't wait for the next one to come out.

A promising and exciting beginning, then at about page 75 or so, you find out the nature of the forces aligned against our heroes and it's downhill from there. I should have shut the book for good right then but I didn't. This combined third-rate DaVinci Code elements with the worst Twilight-type sappy mooniness. And it committed the sin that the best book series never do - no conclusion to the story, no resolution to some of the plotlines; it just stops and you're supposed to pick up everything in the next installment. Such a disappointment because I'm a very big fan of Rollins' SIGMA novels.

I have so little time to read right now and I wasted it on this stupid book...

I have mixed feelings about this story.

It's very exciting. But then, I expect nothing less from James Rollins. But at times, the genre blending was jarring. It felt like I was reading two separate books, but the same story. With the vampire aspects, there were a few times that I felt like laughing, and I don't think that was intended. Not that I don't love vampire stories! I do! But I don't expect vampires with James Rollins novels. It felt like the book was pitched like this: "Ooh! You know what would make history-centered thriller novels BETTER? VAMPIRES!"

So, that's all that kept it being 5 stars. Even still, I highly recommend it and I will rabidly consume any and all books in the this series.

And I will probably still laugh at the vampire bits.

This was an awesome book. Very different from normal Rollins books (though I don't know if any of his books are really normal). It still has the same amazing action and adventure to it as all other works by James Rollins, but it also has the supernatural aspect, which makes it feel completely different. I can't wait for another one!

I've never before read one of James Rollins books. This is my first and I was not disappointed at all. The story moved a long quickly and the characters were engaging. There was a couple of plot points I could see coming but some times if the trip getting there is good enough it doesn't matter.

I will certainly read any more books that come along in this series.

I also really liked the narrator. I thought he did a very good job and I liked his voice.
