This was very much a beach read - over the top and unfortunately, forgettable. I think I keep thinking that I like Unger's style more than I do, but I've apparently not really liked anything I've read by her. This book was just all over the place. Mako was such an over the top character that I was waiting for something bad to happen to him because he was such a pain. The quick switch to Henry was confusing and felt out of place - and when it was finally revealed how he fit into the rest of the plot, it was so absurd and out of nowhere that I just didn't care at all.

If you're looking for a quick read that's borderline silly with how over the top it is, this might be a good choice. However, if you're someone who likes to be able to find clues to figure out the mystery, give this one a pass, since it makes almost no sense...

This was my first attempt at a thriller, I only picked it for the cover tbh. I’d suggest skipping it.

The first third was somewhat interesting, but then it derailed for me. There are too many characters and povs, some of which seemed to have been thrown in unnecessarily. I also really don’t like to read about stalkers so it got a bit triggering for me. I looked up how it ends and it wouldn’t have been worth it to keep reading.

It also really felt like it was going to have a ‘childhood trauma and mental illness makes you homicidal or a stalker’ Kind of take, as the two antagonists seemed to be the only characters in the entire book with mental illness issues (besides Hannah’s mom, who was also just a shitty person). This came out last year. We’re done with that trope. That should never have been a trope to begin with.

Thankfully I got this for free at a little free library so I didn’t waste my money.

I was intrigued from the beginning. I was able to predict some of the twists, and I didn’t find any of the characters particularly likeable, but that didn’t bother me much since I enjoyed the suspense of still trying to figure out how we got there. The pacing was good for the most part, and I would recommend this one for readers who enjoy a good locked-room mystery.

A decent thriller detailing the story of how much does genetics play a role in who we are.

Parts of the book felt too complicated than they needed to be and the ending felt too fluffy to me, but the writing was solid and the characters well developed.
