Not LJā€™s best join, but not garbage (donā€™t listen to Amber Bloem Main). The antagonist, Adrian, is really unlikable. His total disregard for other peopleā€™s feelings is super annoying, but his complete lack of self awareness is infuriating.

This is not a thriller. This is a book about a shitty man doing shitty things and an entire female character who lives, is harassed, and dies just to give him a redemption arc.

The front cover had me so intrigued. ā€œOne man. Three marriages. A tangled web of lies.ā€ Where?!! All I read about was a self pitying man. I kept waiting for it to get better but it just did not. I do not recommend this book if youā€™re looking a thriller.

3 stars! Lisa Jewell is really a hit or miss for me and this is probably my favorite novel from hers that I've read to date. This book is less about what happened to Maya, and more about the premise of family. I'd rate this as a contemporary fiction with a hint of mystery.

Maya is married to Adrian and is his third wife. He already has 2 children with his first wife Susie, and three children with his second wife, Caroline. One day, May doesn't make it home. She is struck by a bus and killed on impact. Was she pushed, was it suicide? Adrian is determined to find out once the pieces of the tragedy begin to unfold.

I thought that the overall pace of the book was good. I felt invested into the plot and characters and wanted to know what was going to happen next as I was flipping through the pages. At first, it was hard to navigate who the five children all were and how they played a role in the story. I thought the book was centered around a family trying to live their lives in harmony pretending that they weren't broken. This was a good read! I'd recommend!

This book was...honestly, quite depressing. I've read Lisa's other book called Then She Was Gone and I loved it. The deepness of the characters, the gripping plot. This one was none of that. The more I read the book, the more hatred I developed for some of the characters. I felt like the plot was shallow and less significant, less capturing.

Good book, but perhaps could have been better.
