Raw, real, and descriptive story-telling narrating the dysfunctional and abusive relationships in families. The ending fell a bit flat for me. After the immersive language and storytelling throughout the book, I was expecting a more powerful and satisfying ending. *READER WARNING - The writer unapologetically describes abuse - childhood neglect, sexual assault, rape.*

Terminei este livro totalmente perdida. Esta leitura foi uma viagem no mínimo peculiar: no início não estava a gostar da narrativa e, admito, não estava a perceber onde é que a autora queria chegar; a meio do livro fiquei totalmente compenetrada e até me custava parar de ler; terminei o livro extremamente desiludida com o final. Elle é daquelas personagens que, em certas situações, parece ser extremamente madura e decidida, mas noutras é a pessoa mais indecisa e complicada. Para além disso, tudo na sua vida é dramático e exagerado: uma mãe que não adora, mas depois acaba por tolerar; um meio-irmão insuportável e violador; uma irmã bastante diferente dela que acaba por falecer; um marido aparentemente perfeito, mas que não é suficiente; um melhor amigo que é amante. Dá para perceber que é caótico, certo? Mas a verdade é que a escrita é cativante e consegue agarrar-nos ao livro. No entanto, não é suficiente. Aquele fim aberto (mas que a autora diz com todas as certezas que é fechado) foi a gota de água - terminei todo o drama com uma suposição minha, quando queria ver Elle a tomar uma decisão.

I have a real problem with the way some fiction writers use trauma, in this case child sexual abuse, to feed narrative and illuminate character. When trauma is used in this voyeristic, surface-level and manipulative way I am guaranteed to hate a book. I hated this book. If trauma and abuse are just there as a placeholder for ‘family secrets’ then I am out. Heller never managed to earn my trust and that is where this all fell down for me.
