There is much about this book that is important and meaningful, and beautifully written. Indeed, three of the four plot lines were gut-wrenching, powerful, and — I’ll say it again — vitally important. So why only two stars? Because the fourth plot line, the one that weaves the three together, is so absolutely infuriating that I found myself ranting about it on multiple occasions — with my family, my colleagues, the cats; really, anyone’s ear I could bend. The situation is ludicrous and unrealistic. The “older person love story” reads like a teenage bodice ripper. Each of the three backstories creates a character you’re rooting for, even aching for, and the present day story is so out of character for them you want to shout in frustration and wring their paper (or digital) necks! When the story is not being ridiculous, it’s horribly schmaltzy and gross. I’d like to say I hated every minute of this book, but the time spent in backstory was worth it. Not worth it enough to pick up the book, so don’t — but worth it enough for me to finish, albeit unsatisfactorily.
P.S. I hate writing scathing reviews. I deeply appreciate the effort to write a novel. The only reason I am comfortable being so forthright here is that Isabel Allende is one of the world’s most successful authors, and my little review won’t hurt her sales.

Took me a while to get into it but once you get into the story, it’s really good.

I began this book and was getting into it and liked learning about the characters and then there was a potential murder aspect that I was not aware of that became a big focus. I got to 39% after stopping and starting multiple times. I really care about the characters and want to know what happens to them, but I'm not sure if I can stomach the murder storyline.

Esta autora chilena, con larga trayectoria y reconocimiento, nos presenta un libro suyo, sí, suyo, de ese estilo narrativo y temático tan característico.
Sin hacer spoilers, os puedo decir que es una novela de rápida y fluida lectura, con un contenido más enfocado al desarrollo de los personajes que a los hechos en sí.
La autora, ha tomado como excusa unos acontecimientos para presentarnos a los protagonistas. Es decir, si me dijeran que dentro de un tiempo van a sacar una segunda parte de este libro no me extrañaría. Ya que, tras contarnos como son, nos podría seguir explicando que les ocurre.
Es a ese estilo al que me refería, tan característico. Isabel Allende, desde mi punto de vista, crea personas, más que personajes.

"وأدركتُ أخيراً، في وسط الشتاء، أن في داخلي صيفاً في حالة سبات شتويّ."
لا تكتشف كم تشتاق لشخص الا بعد ان تلتقيه مجدداً، وهذا ما حدث معي و"إيزابيل ألليندي" التي لم أقرأ لها منذ سنوات واكتشفت مع الصفحات الاولى كم افتقدها وكم هي مميزة ولا تشبه الا نفسها.
في "ما وراء الشتاء" قدمت لنا "ألليندي" رواية ممتاسمكة كٌتبت بطريقة جميلة، وبايقاع هادئ وممتع بدأت بتعريف الشخصيات الرئيسية للرواية من "لوثيا" الى "ريتشارد" ومن ثم "إيفلين" معطية المساحة كافية للقارئ كي يتأمل الشخصيات ويخلقها في مخيلته قبل ان يبدأ بربطها سوياً. ولقد وفرت لنا مساحة كافية من الاحداث كي نفهم سبب تجمع الكل في "بروكلين".
ان الفصول التي تركتها لنا "إلليندي" ما بين الحدث الرئيس كانت جميلة للغاية وتطرقها مرة اخرى في قصة "لوثيا" الى الحرب التشيلة وانتخاب سلفادور إلليندي في هذه الرواية ايضاً يضع مرة اخرى الواقع الذي عاشته هي نفسها قبل بطلة روايتها في صلب الاحداث وهو ما يقرب هذه الرواية الى حقيقة. وفي سردها لما تعرضت له "لوثيا" هناك ومع اخوتها ووالدتها وتفاصيل حياتها المثخنة بالجراح كانت تفاصيل غنية للسرد الخاصة بهذا العمل. ونفس الأمر ينطبق على كل من "ريتشارد" الذي جعلتني بعض تفاصيل السيرة الخاصة به مصدوم من وقع ما تعرض له ومبهور من المخيلة الغنية لـ "إيزابيل"، ضف الى ذلك المعاناة الكبيرة التي تعرضت لها "إيفلين" هي الاخرى.
كل هذه الجراح جمعت ابطالنا الثلاث في رحلة شيقة وممتعة، لا تخلو في نفس الوقت من الحب والحياة والتجارب القاسية التي عاشوها سوياً وكيف استطاعت ان تجمعهم سوياً في نهاية المطاف كي يخرجوا من مأزق لا علاقة لأي احد منهم به، ولكن الزمن والألم و"الكارما" جمعتهم كي يداوي جميعهم جراح بعضهم بعضاً ويستمروا في الحياة. "فالحيوات تتشابه والمشاعر هي نفسها."

Allende is a master storyteller and this book is no exception. Told over the course of a few days, but interweaving decades of background, Allende creates a rich tapestry as the three central characters grow. While the trust between them and the depth of the relationship is a bit too accelerated, the story is engaging from the start and beautifully told.
