Everybody had something horrible happen to them at one time or another in their life; it was part of the human condition. How they struggled through adversity proved what kind of people they were.

This book is essentially about how Lena handles what she went through in [b:Kisscut|21719|Kisscut (Grant County, #2)|Karin Slaughter|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348096108l/21719._SY75_.jpg|947888], and how Jeffrey and Sara navigate their dubious relationship. Now that I think my rose colored lenses (toward her books, anyway) have fully worn off, a few things struck me about this one.

Slaughter really knows how to drag things out. This book is slow. It seems like a lot happens, but it doesn't really grab you until the very end.

Lena needs a break. I get that the point of the story is how Lena's trauma led her into more trauma, but this is the third book where she's been victimized in some way, no matter how slight. Don't want to give anything away here. She's a bit of an anti-hero. Her relationship with Jeffrey is strange.

Grant County needs more characters. The amount of horrendous events that happen to the same few families just isn't believable. I kind of feel like it's no wonder some of them go crazy later on, having watched all this happen over the years.

The rape scene in this one makes the rape scene in a later story (chronologically, but still in this universe) even more problematic for me. We're supposed to hate this guy for doing it, but we're supposed to overlook the later one because he's a good character?

I liked it but it was definitely not my favorite.

This book was a bit... daft.

In this book there are a spate of suicides on a local university campus in rural Georgia (USA). Sara Linton, local paediatrician, and coroner (yeah go figure) is called in and demonstrates that they were murders.

Her ex-husband, Jeffery is the Police Chief, but instead of being his usual, sensible self, he comes over all big man on campus, going off half-cocked at Lena Adams, a former deputy who holds they keys to case. The story would have been much shorter for sure, if he hadn't been such a jerk to her.

Sp all in all, not the greatest book in the series.
