Lauren Abrams wants nothing to do with her mother, whose lies sent her father to prison for murder when she was a child. Now, Lauren is being summoned to her grandmother's farm house to help renovate and restore it. Her grandmother has just suffered a stroke and can't manage the farm anymore. Lauren decides to restore it while her grandmother recovers in an assisted living facility. As she renovates and discovers more about her family's past, she can't help but wonder if there are more secrets buried than she realizes. Donna, Lauren's mother, also narrates part of the book, told in the past when she was pregnant with Lauren. We discover a man who is both selfish and childish. When Donna is moved to the farm to rest and give birth, she realizes much more is afoot than meets the eye. I really liked this book, but there were some loose ends I wish had been a bit more tied together. Overall, it was a really enjoyable and suspenseful read.

Received this book as an ARC via Netgalley for an honest review.

Is it a bad sign when you sit down to do the review yo can't remember anything about this book?

This book had promise. It just turned into a big ol' WTF.

Basically a young women, Lauren goes to live with her dad/grandma after he was falsely accused of a murder by her mother. So once he gets out of prison- 10 years later- she develops a strong and very dependent on her pleasing him relationship (not like that- just will do whatever daddy wants, doesn't want to hurt his feelings type). And by doing this, she cuts off her mother. She is yearning for love and approval- and her grandma gives just that. So much that she is gifted the old farmhouse.

I liked her mom. I wish the whole novel was based in her perspective. Sure she comes off as a bit of a bitch, but she had grit. She ended up getting pregnant in her late 30s from a random hook up, who also was a serial cheater. This guy turned out to maybe be a murder... a lovely scenario for your future daughters' father.

While it was a decent read, I remember thinking the writing style came off as very Young-Adultish. I mean, the whole FB/Instagram stories. Like, I get it. I do them too, but the way its presented... just I dunno really didn't seem necessary at all. And the pettiness of the whole ex thing. I get it. I really do. Just. Yah.

Again, I wish it was Donna's side of the story the whole time, those parts made the rating go up.

The ending wasn’t what I expected, though I was headed in the right direction. I didn’t like the untidy web left unsolved.

I really rated this a 3.5, I would have given this 4 stars if there was just a bit more detail on how everything went down. It was a bit hard to get into this book but once I reached 100 pages it become more interesting and suspenseful. I kept going back and forth with who I thought the killer was, and was shocked to find out who it was! I didn’t like how quick the ending came. I was sad to see that I had only one chapter left because I wanted to know so much more.

3 stars. This was a good story, but I was waiting for something MORE. I managed to figure outwhodunnit before it was revealed, but not by much. This was more domestic suspense than a thriller. I don't know if I will be reading more by this author.

Lauren Abrams' mother accused her father of murder in an act of revenge- an act that also led Lauren to live with her later-cleared crime. The accusation had to have been false, since a serial killer's confession is what cleared her father. Right? Returning to the estate of her father's family, Lauren is set to inherit the estate from her grandmother- a generous offer, to be sure. Alternating with a second timeline- featuring Lauren's mother, Donna- the reader is offered glimpses into the secrets of the family and the house Lauren has always loved. What is the truth behind the murder? This was chosen for one of my book clubs and was a fun surprise! 4☆

*I received a free copy of The Last One Home from NetGalley. This has in no way influenced my voluntary review which is honest and unbiased.*

I can mostly just say wow! Stone has written an incredibly tense psychological thriller here, and I could not put the book down. Unreliable narrators, a mystery, flashbacks and present time seamlessly interwoven.

Pick this up when it releases! You won't regret it :)
