Fabulous complex characters, great story beats that all wove together in a satisfying way, tense politics and awesome dragons.

A beautiful, lavish world building prequel that follows four characters as they come of age. Full of strong characters who fight their assumed roles and shape their own destinies. The intricacies of medieval fantasy and royal household politics are full force.

it's difficult to imagine anything topping priory, yet somehow, this book does. emotional, magical, tense, fantastical, wistful, and heartbreaking - no adjectives can do the beauty of this work justice. i cannot wait for the next installation in the heartwrenching, stunning Roots of Chaos world. i will dream of this book for the rest of my days.

Wow, what a story! Darker and more brutal than Priory, but beautiful and wise as well. A great foundation for the Roots of Chaos series.

Glorian Shieldheart what a fucking badass. I got literal chills during some of her scenes. I also appreciated that this book was even more gay than Priory. Truly iconic. The way that Shannon integrates a whole cast of different identities into these books is honestly inspiring. Because of the length of the book, some of the slow reveals really kept me invested. All in all, I’d love to keep reading from this world!
