I have a tendency to add titles to my TBR shelf based on a passing mention that I then promptly forget. Simultaneously, I believe that all the books on my TBR are about subjects of intense interest or relevant to my self-development. Whatever vague idea I had of this book was dispelled in the first 10%, but the writing kept me going until I finally fell in love with the book around halfway through and could not get anything done or have a normal life until I had finished it. Funny while also being devastating and hopeful.

I liked Martha’s relationship with everyone in the book, especially her sister and Patrick. I like how the only thing she really wants is a baby and it takes everyone so long to realize how obvious it is. I like how X doesn’t define Martha.

Wow, I don’t know how to adequately rate this book. I mildly to strongly disliked it for a majority of the book and then I was completely undone by it. It was brilliant and evocative and experiential and none of that is to say it was a pleasant read, but I do think an important one. This book will stay with me, I think maybe for life. Anyone who struggles with mental illness or loves someone who does should definitely read this book and then come talk to me about it because I can guarantee I won’t have stopped thinking about it.
