I wanted to read this book because I had the chance to meet the author, Joseph Delaney, when I was in high school and I said I would read the book, I brought the first one and it has been sat on my TBR for about 2 years. So I thought I would give it a chance, and I loved it. I decided to carry on with the series as I was intrigued by the first book.

The main character is a young boy named Thomas Ward. He is the seventh son of a seventh son. He is the next apprentice for the Spook. The Spook is someone who has been keeping the County safe from evil. His time is coming to an end, and someone needs to take his place. Many have tried, some floundered, some fled, and some are dead. There is just one boy left and that is Thomas. Danger is increasing in the County, the Spooks sends Tom to be trained by another spook whose methods are harsh and tough. But they are faced with a powerful water witch, Tom’s new master makes a fatal mistake, leaving Tom to face his enemies alone. Can the Spook get there in time to save Tom? Can they beat such a terrible dark power together? This is a young adult fantasy paranormal novel. The reading age is from 9 or older.

I still miss Mam, Mam is the main character of this series and I would love for her to return. However, this book was better than the last one. I loved the tension in this book and seeing how the other Spooks train the apprentices. I loved that Tom’s internal monologue was back and better than ever especially with his different conflicts about where he wants to train and who he can trust. I liked that Tom is still grieving his dad and still using his dad’s lessons of life throughout the series. I love that we are seeing more of the dark mysterious creatures such as the Fiend is back and not just doing a Voldemort and killing the MCs and we’ve are getting a tension and borderline friendship between them.

I liked the storyline in this book and left you with wanting more. I can’t wait to read the next book, and hopefully the return of Mam and the Ward family.
