I absolutely loved the feminist core of this book and the ending
Spoilerwith her seeing all the women with the flowers and breaking the toxic cycle for next year's grace year girls was just beautiful.
Plot was so-so but didn't really matter because the premise was so good. Unfortunately, docked a point because I cannot STAND the
Spoiler'keeps the baby because the father is dead'
trope it makes me livid

Wow wow wow wow wow. This is the best book I've read in a long time! It's handmaid's tale meets lord of the flies, (and maybe a little hunger games) and everything was so well thought out. Don't even get me started on the ending because I'll cry. Needless to say, you need to read this. This book was written for women everywhere who have felt like their voices haven't been heard. Check TWs!!

Overall, loved this one. Very lord of the flies-esque and like Wilder Girls. My only criticism is that the message is like don't let men decide the fate and everything of women (women are their own entity and should fight for freedom/equity) but a lot of the defining moments for Tierney, the main girl, is centered around men. I could've dealt without
Spoilertwo men being in love with her and her falling in love with a poacher. And the fact that her love for some dude motivated her for survival. The ending was giving me "Katniss learning to love Peeta" vibes with having kids even though in the beginning the main character didn't want any domestic life. The guard thinking she was his property and being entirely unhinged was a nice surprise moment in the book for me tho
. Well written and kept me enthralled the whole time. Couldn't put it down.

Maybe I’m getting old but the sheer violence in this book took me by surprise. I thought the book concept was interesting and it reminded me of a mix between Running Out of Time (underrated story) meets feminist Lord of the Flies meets Hunger Games. Though I think I’ve seen someone say in their review that they saw the same comparison between the latter two mentioned.
I didn’t love it at first, then got into it just out of curiosity, and then it disappointed me with its ending. As much of a fighter as the main character was I cannot believe it ended the way it did. Hugely disappointing for me.
My main issue with the story is thinking that the YA audience is dumb and cannot grasp concepts such as feminism or systemic inequalities. The tone was aggressive and in your face—I wish it was a bit more subtle and let the reader use their brains.
I also found fault with it just because I don’t identify with thinking people are inherently evil and willing to kill each other at the first drop of societal norms like The Grace Year and Lord of the Flies suggests. I think people have more empathy and drive to survive than just flat out murdering/torturing others. But this is my own soapbox.
All in all it was pretty fascinating, a bit aggressive, but written well.

The Grace Year by Kim Ligget - ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was really excited for this book, but it was just eh for me. It felt very drawn out, and while I won spoil anything, the ending disappointed me. I felt like the book wasn't supposed to end yet.
