The book needed another heavy edit. The “character development” was reduced to short internal monologues that essentially amounted to “I’m different now than 15 seconds ago” with no real support or actual development. I’m all for suspending belief for the sake of fantasy, but terrified virgin slave to poly warrior queen with no actual training, character development challenges, or genuine physical/emotional growth was beyond irrational. Character “development” was generally awkward and disjointed from the plot, which was also incredibly choppy, and world building was minimal and piece mail. Beyond plot and character issues, there were several incongruities (is he a cousin or a nephew?), grammar issues, the writing was generally mediocre, and the tropes were trope-y in all the wrong ways (I love a good trope, but these were predictable and not fleshed out). For a book advertised as it is, I expected much more spice than was actually present.
All that said, I wanted to spend time reading something distracting when I couldn’t focus and didn’t have energy to invest in other things and this was a free bonus download through hoopla on my library card, so it met the criteria for my present situation (hence why I finished it). Unclear if I’ll seek out sequels.
