I always feel saddened when a fantasy setting has potential but the story leaves the greatness on the floor. Just a few touched here and there would’ve enhanced the world, the characters and the story so much but oh well.

A disappointing read, unfortunately. The characters are very flat and the MC is particularly disappointing. She goes from illiterate, abused domestic slave to confident semi military ruler with seemingly no trouble or self doubt at all. Honestly, there are far better dark romances out there. I will say, I did appreciate the hint of queer rep but it was very much just a hint.

I surprisingly liked this book. The first part really had me question but it got good. On spice level there is only a couple ok scenes. I give it 3/5 spice. It is a clif hanger but the second book is out and on KU.
