This one was clever and definitely kept me intrigued. I loved how quick and easy it was to get through.

Wow. Just wow. I did not expect to love this book as much as I did. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend it. It’s a quick read and has a love story, a mysterious disappearance, money coming out of everywhere, and more manipulation than I thought possible for a single book.

Honestly, this novel felt like a unique mix of “Verity” by Colleen Hoover and “The Last Mrs. Parrish” by Liv Constantine – both of which I loved!

While the title gives parts of the plot away, the truth of the events that take place aren’t apparent until the end. Between the secrets each character holds close to their chests, and the manipulative personalities they’ve all developed to become the people they want to be – nothing in this book is as it seems.

I really liked this book and how it was written. Kept me wanting to read more and figure out the truth.
Unfortunately I also HATED the characters. I tried so hard to like them, but they were all nasty people. I guess I kind of like Eddie through some of the plot. I won’t give anything away, but this book was so frustrating at times. Lots of lies and affairs and manipulation.

Spoiler I really wanted Jane and Eddie to end up together. I hated Bea from the start. And there wasn’t much explained about why Eddie locked Bea away. So that was annoying. I also hate cliff hangers in books. And when the fire happened, I was so frustrated that Bea and Eddie died or maybe didn’t die. Who knows because it was a freaking cliff hanger!!! Could have had Eddie escape somehow like breaking the side of the house down and making a hole to escape from then Bea would die in the fire. Then Jane and Eddie could have moved to Hawaii to live together. But no. So that’s what frustrated me the most with the book. And the affairs. Eddie sleeping with Bea when he’s with Jane killed me.

*Actually 3.5 Stars
* Also, warning , possible spoilers ahead for both this book and Jane Eyre.

I probably could have finished this in a day, but real distractions kept getting in the way. I read the last 80% in the span of a morning. If you are looking for quick thriller fix this book will do it.

One of the things that most stood out to me about this book before I read it was that it was referred to as a “Jane Eyre” retelling. Now I read “Jane Eyre” way back in 8th grade and I was a little hazy on the plot details. But when I started reading this book everything came flooding back. After remembering, it was very hard not to anticipate everything that was going to happen. I also spent that time thinking that there may be some twists I won’t see coming. The only twist I didn’t see coming was at the very end, the outcome for Jane, Eddie, and Bea.

I thought the author did a great job on using characters from the original story in new/ modern ways. An example being , Adele , who was Mr. Rochester’s ward in the original and is now a dog in this story. This makes sense as original Jane was hired as a governess for ward Adele and new Jane hired as dog walker for dog Adele.

There was a lot to this book that happened all at once that made the reading experience a bit confusing at times, yet I had fun with the differing perspectives. I wasn't expecting to get Eddie's chapters, and it was a nice touch to put in filler information about his side of things. The ending is ambiguous, yet not a total shock. I don't hate this book, but I don't totally love it either. Overall, I'd give this a 3.5/5!

4 stars. This book was fun and entertaining to read. I like the plot the author gave us in this book. Some parts were easy to guess, but her writing kept you sucked in. I personally enjoyed it and it was also a great palette cleanser for me.
