I remembered liking this a lot more when I read it in high school... Possibly because the abridged version left out half of the scenes I remember reading. Still loved the story as a whole, but not a fan of this abridged edition.

This book was a combination of novel, history book and poetry. My goodness, it was long! I'm really glad I read it, and I enjoyed the novel plot, but I found myself fast forward reading to get to the more character driven sections. I sound like a high school kid, but really, it was just so long! I think I'll stick to the musical in the future!

Um, victory? Reading this was a bit of a chore. And it's not very modern, as say, War and Peace is turning out to be. It's hard to tell how much of that owes to the translator.

I don't really get the "social message" Hugo intended. I think our children will always be reliant on their parents to make good, or at least not terrible, decisions. To turn over the raising of children to the state will never be preferable.

This is, by far, the most beautiful book I've ever and probably will ever read. Victor Hugo really made me a different person. I am reborn.
