3/3.5 stars. The story reads easily and is enjoyable, but the world and most of the characters are underdeveloped and not well described.

It was a confusing start, being thrust into this world without being given much context. A lot of the characters and the scenes also could have been developed and fleshed out further. A little hollow if I'm being honest but not bad for a first try at a YA fantasy. Still would probably pick up the second book and decide from there.

I have finally managed to finish slogging through this and y'all, it was bad. So here are my three biggest gripes:

1. I deeply hated the integration of social media and fantasy elements.
2. All of the characters were so flat and underdeveloped, I didn't care about the story in the slightest.
3. The world-building was so confusing, the magic system never made any sense to me.

TOO MUCH!

This could have been influenced by listening to the audiobook at 2x speed, but this felt like just a big infodump. There is potential but SOOO much elements are introduced and we aren't given enough time to really process one thing before the next big thing is introduced. It makes me question what he plans for the rest of the series; what more can be revealed??

Adam usually excels at writing characters and connections/relationships, but it hurts to say that this was weakest area of this book. Or maybe its just that his characters were meant to be so unlikable. Losses didn't hit as much I expect they meant to....I'm just disappointed...not that I went in with huge expectations, I'm just fan of Adam, his stories, and what he brings for representation. But I always think that its good that diverse representation exists no matter good or bad, just like white heteronormative have trash stories tend to exist. They can't all be diamonds. Keep doing you Adam!

This is such cool world building. I love Adam Silvera's books so much and his writting style so much. I also like these boys so much. And their mom. So many of their friends and family are amazing but so many bad things are happening to them. The magic and celestial are very cool and the powers are so fun! Also magic Beasts, all in New York! Very fun book and it's Gay! Highly recommend and I will be reading the rest of the series!
