This story is narrated by a man in his early 30s who will recall his time living in what he calls the brownstone building, and one neighbor in particular named Holly Golightly.
The narrative begins with our narrator being contacted by Joe Bell, owner of a corner bar where he and Holly used to go. Joe has news of Holly's possible whereabouts, as it turns out that she has been missing for over five years.
Holly is a 19 year old girl who has a very mundane life. She throws a lot of parties in her apartment in New York, and is almost always accompanied by older men.
With our narrator's digressions, he tells about his arrival in this building and his contact with Holly. This one often forgot the key to the entrance to the building, so she would ring our narrator's bell to gain entry. And over time, they get to know each other better.
The curious thing is that we never learn the name of our narrator, we only know him as Fred, which is the name Holly gives him, as it reminds her of her brother.
Holly's way of life and story life is quite peculiar, and everything is revealed throughout the narrative. She earns money by paying visits to an elderly mafia man in jail, posing as his niece. And this situation will be the trigger for the outcome of the narrative.
Holly was thus a magnetic personality, which made everyone around her attracted to her, although she was not a woman of great attributes, either physical or mental. She is a person detached from things and people. She doesn't decorate her apartment, she still has everything boxed up, she doesn't name the cat... everything so it doesn't take root.
She talks to "Fred" about her “mean reds” that only go away when she goes to the window shop at Tiffany's. Perhaps anxiety attacks as we now know them.
Something that attracted me to this novella was the writing. It's my first experience with Capote and it was wonderful! A simple but complex writing at the same time. The way he made Holly with a questionable character, but at the same time endearing was amazing!

I wasn’t expecting to love Holly as a character, just as I wasn't expecting her character to be treated with that much respect or be given depth.

i loved breakfast at tiffany’s, but i loved a diamond guitar and a christmas memory even more. i’ve never been touched by a short story like i was with those two pieces and it even made me sob at my kitchen table LMAO i would recommend this book even if just for those two short stories

knocking off a quarter star though for house of flowers. maybe i need to reread but i didn’t connect or feel engaged with that story at ALL compared to how i usually connect with capotes writing

This book is so awesome. So much happening so quickly that you you almost have to go back and read again.

It’s a great classic and really worth the rather quick listen/read. One of the best stories of all time.
