Niko, a retired soldier, embraces newfound peace alongside her former unit. They operate a restaurant called The Last Chance. However, they're soon embroiled in an unexpected conflict. Compelled onto a sentient ship, they find conflict quickly.

This was so fun and cozy. And then, it was NOT. It was filled with heartbreak and torture and it was jarring. And then it was cozy and fun again. I wish the stakes were a lot lower in the middle because yeesh.

I listened to this on audiobook on Libby over the course of about a month. And it was all right to listen to, but there were certainly some things about it that could have been written better in my opinion. I really don't like how the character, Petalia, was treated in the story. And if there is ever a sequel then that character really needs to be done justice. I really enjoyed the titular ship you sexy thing and it's development as a character. The rest of the cast was well written enough for me to continue listening to the audiobook, but I don't think I would have enjoyed reading the physical book of this as much since listening on audiobook was very passive for me.

A fabulous find. I read a review over at Smart Bitches, Trashy books (great book review site) and in keeping with the culinary themes which this book runs with Carrie S describes the characters as ingredients
Ingredients:

A military leader with a mysterious past
A haunted gourmet restaurant on a space station
A chef with four arms
A receptionist with tentacles
An assistant chef who is a chimpanzee
A pastry chef who is, apparently, more or less a swan
Twin playful but deadly “magic-resistant were-lions”
An unreliable reptilian prophet
Inter-galactic politics
A food critic
A bio-ship who enjoys experiencing and cataloging new emotions
A lost princess
Pirates
Tragic romance
Found family
humor, angst, action, bonding
Sequel-bait
and I can't disagree. A story of found family in an intriguing universe that I look forward to exploring in the series.  That's my only not_really_a_complaint is that I can immediately start reading the next book.

Originally posted on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

You Sexy Thing is a virtuosic standalone SF novel by Cat Rambo. Released 16th Nov 2021 by Macmillan on their Tor imprint, it's 304 pages and is available in hardcover, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

I've been a fan of the author for years and some of their short fiction is not just good, but sublime. The writing here is, as always, competently written and eminently readable. The main themes here, of found family, finding one's purpose, and making the universe a slightly better place, sit side by side with LGBTQIA+ representation (which -hallelujah- does *not* drive the entire plot), adventure, and a solid mix of humor which surprised a chuckle out of me in several places.

There is so much going on in the plot that it could easily have devolved into a muddled chaotic mess, but the author is skilled and technically so adept at their craft that the whole gels into a cohesive and entertaining melange.

The titular "Sexy Thing" is an AI bio-ship central to the plot, and this is not a racy/sexy book by any salacious definition of the word. There is some inherent violence (it's a pirate space opera), but again, not egregious, and the violence is integral to the plot. As in much of the author's oeuvre, there is heavy tragedy mixed in amongst the humor. I found the second half of the book hard going at places.

Four stars. All in all a good and worthwhile space opera with some foodie moments. The author writes very very well.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

A fantastically funny romp through space. Think firefly meets hitchhikers guide and then goes completely off the rails
Hilarious stand alone book

Fun start with a great deal of promise, but it sags in the middle. Aspiring to comparisons with Firefly is a bit of overreach, but there are elements of shared DNA. Recommend to established SF readers rather than as gateway.
