This fairy tale is tragic!

First, the parents can't afford to feed their children so they begin to leave them out in the woods until they cannot find their way back. THEN they get caught by an evil witch who makes a house out of bread so she can trap, fatten up, and feed on little children. When they finally rid of the witch and steal her jewelry, they found their way back by crossing a stream on the back of a duck. But at least they are all happy in the end.

Hänsel und Gretel was an interesting read. The original version struggled with the mother, the children were constantly referred to as the Father’s children and she was the wife. Later in the story she is mentioned as the mother. After 1840 the Brüder Grimm changed her to a stepmother.

There are so many facilitating little details that pop up as you study these old tales. I love it.
