Oh Jude Deveraux. Why don't you have your characters use condoms? You have stories that are consistently good, but the sex scenes are so dated. The main characters just "know" that they are meant for each other (without talking about what exactly the relationship is) and they just immediately fall into bed. Sigh.
Kim Aldredge is floundering a little. Her best friend has just married her cousin and, while she's happy for them, she's feeling a little left behind. (In her mid-twenties? Really?) She's got a boyfriend but she's not sure that he's "the one." Besides, she's never gotten over her childhood friend, Travis Merritt.
But she never knew his real name. She's looked for him, off and on, but all of a sudden, Travis has shown up at her friend's wedding. She immediately invites him to stay in her guest house. He's here to check up on his mother who has been in hiding for several years; hiding from his father. Now she's made contact to let Travis know that she's getting remarried. He's worried about his mother, plus, it seems like a good time to reconnect with Kim.
It's a testament to Ms. Deveraux's writing and story weaving skills that I enjoyed a book that I had so many issues with (quick relationship, lack of protection, B plot). I think it was the fun characters and the fact that the story never drags that kept me involved.

I normally love Jude's books but this one just didn't really do it for me. There wasn't much intrigue that kept me turning pages. I did finish it but it was just meh for me. It wasn't horrendous but it wasn't my favorite either.

On the whole I have enjoyed the books in this series. They are quick, easy, light reads. You know what is going to happen. You get to enjoy the ride. This one is no different. Kim made an appearance (a bit) in the last book. This focuses on her childhood friend, Travis (friend for like two weeks, but strong bond?). Travis comes back in her life because surprise his mom is hiding out in Edilean from his overbearing father. She has found a new guy and Travis has to come investigate because she's gonna marry him! Well he gets sidetracked by his childhood crush/friend Kim. He spotted her and he feels the same as he did when he was twelve (oh and he apparently has followed her jewelry career and life.) Since his dad is rich he can cope with her being successful and making a lot of money, unlike her other boyfriends. Kim spends most of the book not knowing much about Travis, but oh man does she give him a telling off when she finds out. Women right? Anyway, stereotypical romance. What you would expect. Don't come here for a different romance. But I still enjoyed it and t brought me joy. :)

Quotes:
“As they sailed through the air, Kim thought it could be the end of her life. She glanced at Travis, the last person she’d ever see alive.
He turned his head a bit, his dark eyes wildly alight-and he winked at her.
If Kim hadn’t been terrified, she would have laughed”(p. 104).

“Travis was looking at the room as though he were in a trance and she didn’t think he’d heard a word she’d said.
‘But Jecca would rather raise pink unicorns, so she didn’t take her dad up on his offer.’
‘Where did she get the breeding pair?’
‘What?’
‘Of pink unicorns?’ Travis asked.
‘I thought you weren’t listening.’
‘Didn’t I tell you that I’m a good listener?’”(p. 113).

“'To some derelict old building,’ Travis said. ‘Last night while I was working, the love of my life was flirting with another man, and he told her where to go today. He said that she’d need the help of someone big and strong. Kim seems to think that’s you.’ His tone was light and teasing.
His words ‘The love of my life’ made Penny and Russell look hard at Kim. Penny glanced at Kim’s left hand, obviously noting that there was no ring”(p. 330-331).
